Obsidian - Mexico
This freeform cabochon is made from Mexican Obsidian. This Obsidian is not transparent but instead has a beautiful silver sheen at the top of the cabochon. This silver sheen is in great contrast with the jet black Obsidian.
Obsidian is not a mineral as is sometimes thought, but a rock that is formed when lava comes into contact with water. Because the lava solidifies very quickly, Obsidian is created. The rock has many properties that are the same as glass. Obsidian is therefore also called volcanic glass or natural glass.
